Leathernecks and Crusaders Finish in Scoreless Tie

Both teams had their chances but the match ends in a 0-0 draw.

VALPARAISO, Ind. — The Western Illinois men's soccer team (1-4-2) played Valparaiso (2-3-1) to a 0-0 draw Saturday, Sept. 15.

The first shot of the day came from Xavier Brown in the eighth minute but the Crusaders defenders teamed up to knock it away. It took 30 minutes for the next shot on goal on an attempt by Arian Mehrang that was corralled by the Valparaiso goalkeeper.

Both offenses were limited in the second half and Valparaiso missed a prime opportunity to take the lead in the 78th minute. After a Leatherneck foul in the box, Adam Garcia attempted the penalty kick and Tim Trilk was there for the crucial save.

The match entered overtime and in the 95th minute, the Crusaders came close to scoring again when Michael Marchionna's header hit the post. Orsy Gonzalez fired a shot in the 99th minute but it was saved to send the game to a second overtime.

Tacuma Sadlow let off his second shot of the game that was saved in the 105th minute. Western Illinois turned up the pressure in the final minutes of the match as a shot from Christian Junna was hauled in. During the last minute of the contest, Gonzalez missed a header attempt left as the match ended in a 0-0 tie.

The Leathernecks return to Macomb on Tuesday, Sept. 18 for a 4 p.m. match against IUPUI.
