Men's Soccer Plays Host to Dayton

The Leathernecks wrap up their four-game homestand on Saturday, Sept. 8.

MACOMB, Ill. — Western Illinois men's soccer concludes its homestand by welcoming in Dayton Saturday, Sept. 8 at 1 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT: 
The Western Illinois men's soccer team (0-3-1) scored two late goals, but the rally fell short in a 3-2 loss against Bowling Green on Sunday (Sept. 2).
 
The Falcons kicked off the scoring in the 19th minute as Vinny Worner connected the back of the net off an assist by Charlie Maciejewski. Bowling Green added another goal in the 36th minute when Chris Sullivan entered the box and placed the ball into the back left corner for a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
 
Bowling Green built a 3-0 advantage in the 69th minute on a header by Moe Mustafa following a corner kick. Western Illinois answered in the 79th minute on a Paul Kirdorf strike from the corner of the box to get the Leathernecks on the board. After a Bowling Green foul four minutes later, Kirdorf delivered a penalty kick goal to trim the deficit to 3-2. The Leathernecks had one last chance in the 89th minute, but Daniel Kadima missed wide to the left as the Falcons came out on top 3-2.  

COACH JOHNSON'S THOUGHTS: 

"We need to focus on our defensive positioning for this game," Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson said. "We are making strides but are still not consistent iin our effort and communication. Dayton is a very good team and will give us a real test as we continue our journey to come together as a unit."

SCOUTING THE FLYERS: 
Dayton was picked to finish fifth in the Atlantic 10 this season and currently sits at 2-0-2 overall after playing Marshall to a 0-0 draw on Monday (Sept. 3). The Flyers earned their second win of the season on Friday, Aug. 31 against common opponent Milwaukee 2-0. Western lost 4-1 at Dayton in the second last season with Drew Whalen scoring the lone Leatherneck goal.

Dennis Currier is in his 14th season as the head coach of the Flyers and is the program's all-time wins leader with a 132-84-41 record at the helm. Senior defender Aidan Bean leads the way with two goals and four points so far. Junior goalkeeper Federico Barrios has an Atlantic 10 high 14 saves and leads the nation with three shutouts in four games.
 
LOOKING AHEAD: 
The Leathernecks head north to face Northern Illinois on Wednesday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m.
