Leatherneck Rally Comes Up Short

Paul Kirdorf scores two late goals but Western Illinois falls 3-2 to Bowling Green.

MACOMB, Ill. — The Western Illinois men's soccer team (0-3-1) scored two late goals, but the rally fell short in a 3-2 loss against Bowling Green on Sunday (Sep. 2).

"Bowling Green was really good in the first half," Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson said. "Their (Bowling Green) off the ball running was top shelf. I thought we showed some heart in the second half but it was too little too late. It's very difficult to win a soccer game if you don't match the work rate of your opponent."

The Falcons kicked off the scoring in the 19th minute as Vinny Worner connected to the back of the net off an assist by Charlie Maciejewski. Bowling Green added another goal in the 36th minute when Chris Sullivan entered the box and placed the ball into the back left corner for a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.

Bowling Green built a 3-0 advantage in the 69th minute on a header by Moe Mustafa following a corner kick.

Western Illinois answered in the 79th minute on a Paul Kirdorf strike from the corner of the box to get the Leathernecks on the board. After a Bowling Green foul four minutes later, Kirdorf delivered a penalty kick goal to trim the deficit to 3-2. The Leathernecks had one last chance in the 89th minute, but Daniel Kadima missed wide to the left as the Falcons came out on top 3-2.

The purple and gold return to the pitch in a home match against Dayton at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sep. 8.
