Leathernecks Drop Decision to Green Bay

Western Illinois outshot the Phoenix 10-5.

MACOMB, Ill. — The Western Illinois men's soccer team (0-2-1) fell 2-0 to the Green Bay Phoenix on Friday (Aug. 31).

After a foul on Western Illinois, Green Bay took advantage on a penalty kick goal from Tomer Zloczower as the clock hit 12 minutes. Shots came at a minimum for the Phoenix in the first half but Bernard Assibeyrhule stole the ball and found the back right corner of the net to put Green Bay ahead 2-0 in the 30th minute.

The Leathernecks went on the attack with a shot on goal in the 33rd minute by Gimale Essacu and another five minutes later from Daniel Kadima but both were saved as Western Illinois trailed 2-0 at halftime.

One of Western's best chances came in the 65th minute off a corner kick from Paul Kirdorf but Cesar Cosio had his header attempt corralled by the Phoenix goalkeeper as the Leathernecks dropped the match 2-0.

The purple and gold return to the pitch in a home match against Bowling Green at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sep. 2.
