Jayhawks Top Leathernecks in Regular Season Finale

Western and Kansas met at Hoglund Field for their final game of the regular season, and the final score fell, 19-6.

LAWRENCE, Kan. – When it rained, it poured, both on the field and on the scoreboard, as Western Illinois' baseball team battled Mother Nature and Kansas Sunday (May 20) at Hoglund Field. The game ended in seven innings, 19-6, in favor of the Jayhawks and marked the regular season finale for both squads.

A two-run Leatherneck advantage quickly turned into a 6-2 deficit by the end of the second inning as the Jayhawks batted through the order. The home team loaded the bases to score with two singles, a hit by pitch, and an error.

Alex Dorethy cut Western's deficit in half, 6-3, with a solo home run in the next inning and added another RBI in the fifth with a sacrifice fly. The rain ceased, but the runs continued to pour in as CJ Schaeffer sent the Leathernecks' second homer of the day down the left field line. The three runs scored in the fifth marked an inning high.

Five pitchers appeared in the game for WIU and Ben Sellers was the lone hurler not to allow a run. He closed the game with season-highs in strikeouts (4) and innings pitched (2.0).

The Leathernecks claimed the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Summit League Tournament and will play No. 3 North Dakota State in the opening round. The double-elimination tournament begins Wednesday at 12 p.m.

Every game will take place on the campus of the top seed, Oral Roberts.
