Three Unearned Runs Separate Leathernecks in Finale

The ballgame was tied at 3-3 heading into the bottom of the eighth.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Three unearned runs proved to be the difference in Western Illinois baseball's 6-3 setback at Evansville Sunday afternoon.

The teams were tied at 3-3 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning where the Purple Aces' leadoff batter reached on an error. A pair of singles to center field made way for the home side to score three runs in the frame.

Evansville held a one-run edge by the end of the opening inning before Caleb Jacobs tied things at the top of the fifth with his first collegiate RBI. The freshman sent a sacrifice fly to center field to bring in Grant Hannant from third base.

The Purple Aces plated two at the close of the inning, but again saw the scoreboard evened at 3-3 by the seventh. Jacobs, Dillon Sears and Deion Thompson recorded three straight singles, and the latter traveled to left field to score a run.

Johnathan Fleek grounded out to second base an inning earlier but put enough on the attempt to bring home a run.

Thompson and Jacobs finished the game with two hits apiece.

Western (0-9) returns to the Hoosier State during spring break with action against Indiana State (March 10-12) and Indiana (March 13-14).
