Leathernecks Outlasted by Missouri State, Wichita State

WIU fell 2-1 to the Bears, and 7-6 to the Shockers.

WICHITA, Kan.- Western Illinois softball battled Missouri State and Wichita State Sunday (March 11), and both ended in walk-off fashion. Game one saw the Leathernecks fall 2-1 to the Bears in extra innings, and in the tournament finale, Western erased a 4-2 deficit before a walk-off home run sealed a 7-6 decision against the host Wichita State.
 
GAME ONE
 
With one out and runners on second and third in the tenth inning, Missouri State scored after the runner slid under the tag for the winning run of the ballgame.
 
After two scoreless frames from both sides to begin the game, the Leathernecks struck first in the third inning. Emily Ira broke the hitless game for the Leathernecks with a single to left field and on the ensuing at-bat, Payton Abbott was hit by a pitch to put two runners on base for the Purple and Gold. With runners on second and third, Hailey Duwa hit a line drive up the middle to score Ira. 
 
The Leathernecks were close to extending their lead in the top of the fourth inning after Ira singled to center field, but Marlow was thrown out at the plate for the final out of the frame.
 
The Bears tied the game in the sixth inning after a leadoff double and an ensuing RBI-single matched the Leathernecks' one run.
 
The Leathernecks got a runner on in the seventh inning after pinch hitter Madison Boone drew a walk but couldn't capitalize. 
 
Payton Abbott came on to pitch for Ira in the seventh inning after a pitch hit Ira while batting in the sixth inning. Abbott retired the Bears in order to force extra innings.
 
Rachel Beatty led off the eighth inning with a single through the left side and advanced on a sacrifice bunt from Abbott.  The Leathernecks could not advance her any further and she was stranded on second base to end the inning.  WIU got another leadoff single off the bat of Kelsey Marlow in the eighth inning to put a runner on base for the Leathernecks.
 
With a runner on first and one out, Missouri State turned a double play to end the inning.
 
The Bears led off the ninth inning with a double over Ashley Minyard's head and was advanced to third base with a sacrifice bunt. Abbott struck out the next two batters to end the inning and advance the game into the tenth inning.
 
Ira ended as the only Leatherneck with a multi-hit game. She also was effective in the circle, striking out eight and walking one batter in six innings of work.


GAME TWO
 
With two outs and two runners on the bases, Wichita State sent a ball over the center field wall to win in walk-off fashion, 7-6.
 
The Leathernecks exploded in the sixth inning beginning with a Duwa single down the left field line. Alyssa Ealy came on to pinch run for Duwa, and swiped her first base of the season. After Marlow drew a walk, Minyard singled to load the bases for Western Illinois. With one out in the sixth, the Shockers attempted to throw out Marlow at the plate, but the catcher pulled her foot off of the dish for the first run of the rally. The comeback continued when Hollatz walked with the bases loaded to tie the ballgame.
 
Sustaining the rally was Sam Ralphs, after she came into pinch hit for Lara. She singled past the shortstop to score two runs and gave the Leathernecks the 6-4 lead. It was not enough, as the Leathernecks eventually fell in the bottom of the seventh.
 
To begin the game, Rachel Beatty showed off her arm in the bottom of the opening frame, as she threw out a Shocker from right field trying to score.

The Leathernecks took the lead in the top of the second inning after Marlow led off with a triple down the right field line and advanced home on an infield single off the bat of Minyard.
 
With one out in the inning, Bottino hit a ground ball to third base, but the Shockers fumbled the ball and allowed Marlow to score. During the following at-bat, Hollatz singled to right field to scored Minyard, and extended the lead to 2-0.
 
The Shockers plated their first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run over center field.
 
Wichita State tied up the game in the third inning with a double to left field, but the Leathernecks did not allow any more damage in the frame.
 
Minyard led off the fourth inning for the Purple and Gold with a single up the middle and advanced to second base, and then to third base, because of a two wild pitches. The Leathernecks threatened, but could not retake the lead and left Minyard on third.
 
After a double that scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning for the Shockers, Wichita State held a 4-2 lead before the late inning drama occurred.
 
The Leathernecks head to Lawrence, Kansas, for a five-game slate in the Rock Chalk Challenge on March 16-18.
