Western Surges By Oral Roberts Off Clemens' Record-Setting Day

Emily Clemens set a trio of records in the win over Oral Roberts

TULSA, Okla. —Emily Clemens set a trio of monumental records, as she helped the Leathernecks to an 85-63 win over Oral Roberts behind a second-half surge (Feb. 3).

Clemens neared a triple-double, as she finished with 31 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds for the win. Her 10 assists now make her the all-time Summit League record holder for career-assists, as she passed South Dakota's Nicole Seekamp (2012-16, 628) with 633.

The senior from Muscatine, Iowa also passed former Leatherneck great and Hall of Famer Zane Teilane (2003-06, 1,547 points) for the most points in program history with 1,558 points thus far. Clemens also broke another Summit League record with 516 free throws made, as she passed Oakland's Katie Wolfe (509, 199-2003).

"I'm proud of the way we battled in the first half and found a way to take a lead to the locker room," said head coach JD Gravina. "We played a tremendous second half and really got going offensively. They are a good team and tough to beat here, so I like what this win does for us in terms of conference standings and the postseason conversation."

The Leathernecks held a 15-14 lead after the first quarter of play. A three-pointer by Morgan Blumer off a Clemens assist made it 22-18 Leathernecks with less than eight minutes to go in the second. Western tried to break away into a double-digit lead, but the Golden Eagles kept it a four-point game, down 30-26 at the half.

Back-to-back treys by Blumer and Higginbotham opened the third, but Oral Roberts responded with a 6-0 spurt to make it a six-point game (42-36) with less than five minutes left in the quarter. Entering the fourth, Oral Roberts cut Western's lead to 53-44.

Sparked by three drained shots from beyond the arc by Clemens and Higginbotham, Western outscored Oral Roberts 32-19 in the final quarter to cruise to the win. The Purple and Gold improve to 17-7 overall and 7-3 in the league standings, while Oral Roberts falls to 14-9 overall and 5-4 in league play.

Both Higginbotham (16 points, nine rebounds) and Blumer (12 points, eight rebounds) neared double-doubles as well behind Clemens.

The Leathernecks have a few days off before they prep for the next Summit League game against Omaha. Tipoff is scheduled for Feb. 7 at 7 p.m.
