Leathernecks Fall Against Western Carolina and Gardner-Webb

Leathernecks leave 15 combined runners on base

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Leathernecks did not have a problem getting on base during their two games on Saturday (Feb. 17), but were not able to plate runners on base. Against Western Carolina, the Purple and Gold left seven on base in a 1-0 loss and against host Gardner-Webb, WIU stranded eight in a 10-1 defeat.

GAME ONE

Megan Lotarski had a dominant performance in game one against Western Carolina. The Bolingbrook, Ill. native recorded seven strikeouts in six innings of work, yielding five hits and one earned run.

The game was scoreless in the sixth inning when Western Illinois stranded another runner despite Halle Hollatz walking and advancing to second a fielder's choice. Western Carolina broke the tie ballgame in the sixth after a single to right field.

Designated as the visiting team against Western Carolina, Jasmine Lara led off the game with a walk. She was moved around to second on a sacrifice bunt, but was unable to cross the plate as Kelsey Marlow and Hollatz went down.

The Leathernecks opened up the second inning with back-to-back singles from Brooke Stulga and Hailey Duwa, but were unable to take advantage.

Lotarski started in the circle for the Purple and Gold and struck out two batters in the second inning and forced the other pop up into foul territory.

Lara showed off her power in the third inning as she doubled to left-center, but was once again left stranded as the Catamounts retired three straight batters. Lotarski struck back-to-back batters to begin the third inning. The third batter grounded to Hollatz at second for the final out of the inning.

Each team was held scoreless and could not put a runner on in the fourth. Bittino led off the fifth inning and singled past the shortstop but again was stranded.

The Leathernecks could not score in the top of the seventh and fell 1-0.

GAME TWO

Gardner-Webb struck early as the Runnin' Bulldogs led off the first with a single and an error to put a runner on third. The Runnin' Bulldogs then hit an RBI single that put Gardner-Webb on the scoreboard. With the bases loaded and two outs, Katie Prebble hit a grand slam to extend the lead to 5-0. With two outs, Trinity Sterrett singled to score another run for Gardner-Webb.

With one out in their first inning Abbot singled up the middle for the Leathernecks and was advanced to second on a fielder's choice play. Duwa then singled to put two runners on base, but Western could not capitalize.

In the third, Lara walked and was brought home by a Duwa double to center field to put the Leathernecks on the board.

A Hollatz single, error and walk loaded the bases for Western Illinois in the fourth. However, the Leathernecks left all three runners on bases and the Runnin' Bulldogs led 8-1 after four innings of play. Gardner-Webb tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the inning to extend the lead to 10-1

With one out in the fifth inning, Duwa singled up the middle but the inning ended before she could cross home.

Duwa ended the game as the only Leatherneck with multiple hits, going 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

The Leathernecks conclude the Runnin' Bulldog tournament tomorrow at 9 a.m. against Eastern Illinois.
