Softball Drops Final Contest In Runnin' Bulldogs Tournament

Leathernecks fell 4-0 to Eastern Illinois

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.- It was a pitcher's duel for most of the game as there were only three combined hits going into the sixth inning as Western Illinois fell to Eastern Illinois, 4-1.

Eastern Illinois struck in the first inning, as the Panthers hit a two-run homer to go up 2-0 in the opening frame. In the home half of the first inning, the Leathernecks had an opportunity to score with a runner in scoring position after a leadoff Lara double, but left two runners stranded.

Emily Ira found her groove in the second inning, as the Iowa City native struck out two batters in the top of the frame. Offensively for the Leathernecks, Ashley Minyard lined a ball to the shortstop, but the play was made and the Leathernecks could not do any damage.

The third and fourth inning were more of the same as both pitchers found settled in. Through four innings, Ira only gave up one hit and Eastern Illinois had only given up two after a Halle Hollatz single in the home half of the fourth inning.

Each team went down in order in the fifth inning as Ira recorded her six strikeout of the game. Eastern Illinois struck again the sixth inning to push its lead to 4-0 after a leadoff triple and back-to-back doubles.

The Leathernecks put the Panthers down in order in the seventh, but after a Hollatz single, Western could not do any damage.

Ira pitched a complete game, yielding four hits, four runs and seven strikeouts. Hollatz and Lara ended as the only Leathernecks that registered hits in the contest.

The Leathernecks are back on the field on Feb. 23 against UT-Martin in the Frost Classic in Chattanooga, Tenn.
