WIU Falls Twice On Friday In Frost Classic

Leathernecks lose 3-2 to UT Martin and 1-0 to Western Michigan

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Western Illinois dropped both contests on Friday (Feb. 23) as the Leathernecks fell 3-2 to UT Martin and 1-0 versus Western Michigan at the Frost Classic.

GAME 1

Down one run in the seventh inning, the Leathernecks had an opportunity to tie the game, but Halle Hollatz fell rounding third base and was not able to score. A pitch earlier in the contest had hit her, hindering her speed for the would-be go ahead run.

Going into the seventh, the Leathernecks found themselves down 3-0 but managed two runs with two outs. The inning began with two strikeouts, but the Purple and Gold got hot at the plate after Jasmine Lara singled down the right field line. Payton Abbott tripled to right-center to score Lara before a Hollatz walk. Hailey Duwa doubled down the right field line to score Abbott and bring the Leathernecks to within one run. However, they could get no closer.

Western Illinois started the game hot, as Abbott and Hollatz each doubled in the first inning but WIU could not plate a run after Kelsey Marlow grounded to second base to end the inning.

With one out in the second inning, UT Martin struck first after the Leathernecks committed an error that led to an unearned run against Megan Lotarski.

The Skyhawks tacked on two more runs in the third inning after a leadoff bunt and a single that were later scored by a single to center field later in the frame.

Duwa went 2-for-3 in the contest, leading the Leathernecks at the plate. Lotarski and Abbott each appeared in the circle for Western Illinois. Lotarski pitched four innings, striking out two Skyhawks. Abbott pitched the final two frames and struck out three.

GAME TWO

Emily Ira represented WIU in a pitchers' duel in the second game of the day. The junior pitched six innings, striking out one and only allowing five hits.

Western Michigan scored the only run of the contest in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Broncos led the inning off with a double to center field and the runner advanced to third on a fielder's choice play. The runner scored on a wild pitch to put the Broncos up 1-0.

Lara led off the contest with a single to left field but could not reach home as the Leathernecks left one stranded in the first inning.

Ashley Minyard smacked a ball to right field for a single in the second inning, marking back-to-back innings with hits for WIU. Minyard picked up her second hit of the game in the fifth in the leadoff spot. She advanced on Brooke Stulga bunt and moved to third on a wild pitch, but could not score before the inning ended.

With Marlow, Minyard and Minyard up in the top of the seventh inning, the Leathernecks again could not score to tie up the game and fell 1-0.

Western Illinois is back on the diamond Saturday (Feb. 24) against Alabama State (10 a.m.) and Evansville (3 p.m.).
