Leathernecks' Offense Explodes In First Game, Cools Off In Second

Halle Hollatz propelled the Leathernecks' offense with a three-run home run in game one.

PEORIA, Ill.- It did not take very long for the Leatherneck's bats to shake off the rust of the offseason as WIU posted 14 runs in the first game of the day to beat Miami (Ohio) in six innings, 14-0.

"I love how our girls came out today for the first games of the season. They fed off each other at the plate against Miami to keep the rallies going and were very solid on defense. Abby (Carlin) had great command on the mound for her debut and I could not be more proud," said head coach Beth Golitko. "The energy was great all day and I am excited to see that carry in to tomorrow."

In the second game of the day, the Purple and Gold fell to No. 4 Washington, 10-0.

GAME ONE

After not scoring in the first two frames, the Leathernecks' offense exploded, posting three runs in the top of the third inning . Seven Leathernecks logged multi-hit performances (Jasmine Lara, Kelsey Marlow, Payton Abbott, Halle Hollatz, Aly Compton, Rachel Beatty and Brooke Stulga).

In the top of the third inning after an Abby Carlin single, Jasmine Lara doubled to left field and scored Calrin to put WIU on the board. Kelsey Marlow scored Lara on a single after she advanced to third base on a Redhawk wild pitch.

With one out, Peyton Abbot grounded to the shortstop but scored Marlow to extend the Leatherneck lead to 3-0.

The fifth inning proved to be an important one for WIU, as the Purple and Gold plated three more runs. Lara and Marlow led off the inning with back-to-back singles and after two throwing errors, both runners scored. With one out, Brooke Stulga and Carlin drew consecutive walks with the bases loaded, making it 7-0 Leathernecks.

The sixth inning showcased the Leathernecks power after Halle Hollatz belted a three-run homerun. After Compton and Rachel Beatty put together back-to-back singles, Stulga followed Hollatz lead with a homerun over center field to make it 13-0 WIU. The final run of the contest came when Mia Croswell tagged and scored on a Marlow fly out to center field.

The Leathernecks held the Redbirds scoreless in the sixth inning to end the game, 14-0 by way of the 10-run rule.

WIU tallied 17 hits led by Stulga as the senior went 2-3 with a home run and four RBIs. Hollatz added three RBIs to the scorebook.

 GAME TWO

The Leathernecks' bats cooled off in game two of the double-header against No. 4 Washington as Western fell 10-0 in five innings.

The sole Leatherneck hit came in the first inning as Hollatz recorded an infield single, but WIU could not capitalize on the base runner. The Huskeis posted two quick runs in the first innings followed by four in the second.

Each team was held scoreless in the third innings as Emily Ira struck out a batter in the bottom of the frame. The Huskies tacked on four runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by a two-run homerun.

The Leathernecks did not manage to score in the fifth inning, ending the contest.

Western is back in action tomorrow against Saint Louis University at 11:30 a.m. followed by a bout with tournament host Bradley at 3:30.
