The Leathernecks topped Saint Louis 3-2, but fell to Bradley, 5-4.

PEORIA,Ill. - The Western Illinois softball team split action in day two of the Petersen Hotels Invite, topping Saint Louis, 3-2, Sunday morning before dropping a 5-4 decision to Bradley in the afternoon.

The Leathernecks conclude their season-opening weekend with a record of 2-2, which included a 14-0 win over Miami (Ohio) in Beth Golitko's first game as head coach.

GAME ONE

After falling behind 2-0, Western Illinois held Saint Louis scoreless for the remainder of the game and won, 3-2. It was not until Jasmine Lara singled up the middle in the third inning that WIU recorded its first hit.

Halle Hollatz continued her dominance at the plate as she homered over center field in the fourth to put the Leathernecks on the scoreboard. With two out in the inning, Brooke Stulga tripled to right but was stranded after Duwa lined out to the shortstop.

WIU added a pair of runs in the fifth inning to take its first lead of the contest. Bottino was able to reach second on a fielding error to leadoff the inning, and Mia Croswell replaced her on the base path and advanced to third base on a wild pitch. With one out, Kelsey Marlow doubled to score Crowell and advanced to third on a fielder's choice. Hollatz recorded her second RBI of the game after she singled to score Marlow.

The Leathernecks' defense held strong in the sixth inning after three Saint Louis hits. Payton Abbott came on to pitch for the Leathernecks with the bases loaded and did not give up a run after forcing a lineout.

Rachel Beatty led off the sixth inning for the Leathernecks with a double to right center, but WIU could not capitalize and add onto the one run lead.

Hollatz ended as the only player on either side with a multi-hit performance. Megan Lotarski threw the first 5.2 innings for the Leathernecks and recorded the win. Payton Abbott finished the game in the circle and logged the save.

GAME TWO

The Leathernecks jumped out to a quick lead against tournament host Bradley after Meghan Henson smashed a two-run home run over the center field wall in the second inning.

Lara drew a walk during ensuing at-bat, and advanced to third base after Marlow doubled to left center field. Abbott was the next Leatherneck at the plate and singled to left field to bring home Lara. Bradley answered, scoring three runs to tie the game in the bottom half of the second.

Western Illinois returned again in the third to take back the lead after Henson singled to center to score Beatty who walked and stole second.

The game turned again in the fourth inning as Bradley scored to tie up the game at 4-4.

In the sixth inning, the Braves put runners on first and second with no outs, but Emily Ira came in and allowed just one run that put Bradley on top, 5-4.

The Leathernecks had a chance to tie up the game in the seventh inning as Marlow led off the inning with a single. The next two Leatherneck batters advanced Marlow to third on ground balls, but the game ended with Duwa lining out to left field.

The Leathernecks have four days off before returning to the diamond in Boiling Springs, N.C., for a five-team tournament hosted by Gardner-Webb.
