Leathernecks Drop Contests to Eastern Illinois and Gardner-Webb

WIU falls 6-1 to EIU and 6-0 to Gardner-Webb in first day of tournament

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The Western Illinois softball team fell twice Friday (Feb. 16) on the first day of the Runnin' Bulldogs Tournament. In the morning, Western dropped the game 6-1 to Eastern Illinois and fell 6-0 in the afternoon to Gardner-Webb.

GAME ONE

It was a slow start for both teams, as neither team scored a run in the first two innings of the first game of the day. Abby Carlin started in the circle for the Leathernecks. The freshman gave up a single to left field in the first inning but did not let any runs across the plate.

The Leathernecks were held hitless until Abby Carlin singled through the left side of the infield in the fifth inning. Eastern Illinois recorded its first hit in the second inning and broke to scoreless game in the third inning.

Western Illinois had a chance in the top of the fifth inning after a Sam Ralphs' leadoff walk and another Carlin single through the left side. Brooke Stulga reached after a fielder's choice play. However, with two on and one out, Henson and Lara hit back-to-back pop outs to strand the runners.

The Panthers added three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on four hits.

After a leadoff strikeout in the top of the sixth inning, Abbott singled to center field. She was followed by a Halle Hollatz single through the left side. Abbott advanced to third base on a fielder's choice and was brought home by a single from Ralphs.

Eastern Illinois took advantage of a Leatherneck error in the bottom of the sixth and tacked on two more runs on three hits.

GAME TWO

In the bottom of the first, Gardner-Webb singled to begin the inning and scored on a triple to left field to jump out to an early lead in the contest. After loading the bases in the second inning, Gardner-Webb was denied any runs after Megan Lotarski forced a groundout to the shortstop.

In the third inning, Jasmine Lara drew a walk. A fielder's choice play then allowed Payton Abbott to reach. During the ensuing at-bat, Marlow singled, but Abbott was thrown out trying to advance to third base to end the inning.

The Bulldogs plated two runs in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 3-0. Neither team scored in the fifth inning. Lotarski walked a batter and forced two groundouts in the frame.

During the sixth inning, Abbott singled with one out and advanced to second on a Hollatz base hit up the middle. Both Leathernecks were stranded in the inning and left the Purple and Gold scoreless through six frames.

Gardner-Webb was able to score three runs in the sixth inning thanks to three hits and a wild pitch.

Hailey Duwa singled to leadoff the seventh inning before Mia Croswell pitch ran for her. Croswell stole second but was stranded as the Leathernecks were blanked 6-0.

The Leathernecks are back to the field tomorrow (Feb. 16) against Western Carolina at 9 a.m. and again at 11 a.m. against Gardner-Webb.
