Leathernecks Drop Summit League Opener

South Dakota State defeats Western Illinois, 100-58.

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois (5-9, 0-1) men's basketball team opened Summit League play on Friday afternoon (Dec. 28) against the reigning tournament champions, South Dakota State (11-5, 1-0), where it dropped the decision, 100-58.

"Give South Dakota State credit for attacking and never letting up," head coach Billy Wright said. "We are all disappointed, I think our defensive ability is better than we showed this afternoon. This is not what Leatherneck basketball is about and we will work hard to get it corrected."

Matching basket for basket for the first four field goals of the game, the score sat knotted at 5-5 until Alou Dillon broke the stalemate on a contested layup. The basket spurred a 12-0 Jackrabbit run but Western kept things interesting through the midpoint of the frame.

Using an old-fashioned 3-point play, Brandon Gilbeck powered his way over a two SDSU defenders to bank a lay-in; the ensuing free throw pulled the Leathernecks within eight, 19-11, with 12:56 to go, for their closest point differential through the remainder of the game.
David Jenkins finished the half with 23 points, helped by five made 3-pointers, as his team held a 55-30 lead at the break.

Kobe Webster drained a triple with 17:33 to go in the second half as the Leathernecks trailed 57-33, but they could not cut into the deficit anymore. The Jackrabbits finished the game shooting at a 62.1 percent clip as they scored in triple figures for the third time this season.

Zion Young led the way with a career-high 16 points and swished three shots from beyond the arc. Webster added 14 points while Gilbeck contributed 12 points with seven rebounds. C.J. Duff led the squad with five assists.

The Leathernecks return to Western Hall Sunday where they play host to Denver at 4:30 p.m. following the women's contest.
