Leathernecks Dominate Mastodons on Senior Day

Drew Whalen scores a pair of goal in the season-ending 5-1 victory.

MACOMB, Ill. — The Western Illinois men's soccer team (4-10-3, 1-3-1) dominated behind a pair of goal from Drew Whalen on Senior Day in a 5-1 win over Purdue Fort Wayne (10-6-2, 2-3-0) on Saturday, Nov. 3.

"I'm really pleased with the team today and it was long overdue," Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson said. "We started off on our front foot with an early goal and never looked back. Our seniors really led the way today. What a fitting way to end the season on a positive note."

The Leathernecks got off to a fantastic start thanks to a sixth minute goal by Michael Howell off a cross from Paul Kirdorf. Jonah Dancer doubled the early lead in the 12th minute on a strong boot to the bottom left corner of the net. In the 37th minute, Drew Whalen scored for the first time of the season on a rebound for a commanding 3-0 lead.

Western Illinois kept the foot on the gas pedal even with a 3-0 halftime lead. Only two minutes into the second half, Whalen struck again from outside the box on a missile that bounced in off the post. The Mastodons answered a minute later after a foul in the box and Matthew Lieshout sent the penalty kick into the back of the net to cut the deficit to 4-1. After a pass from Christian Junna in the 68th minute, Howell played the ball to Daniel Kadima for a goal into the top right corner.

The Leathernecks finish the 2018 season with an impressive 5-1 victory against Purdue Fort Wayne.
