WIU Drops League Contest To Omaha

Brandon Gilbeck finishes with 16 points and two rebounds

MACOMB, Ill. - The Western Illinois men's basketball team fell to Omaha on Thursday night (Jan. 11) 87-66 inside of Western Hall.

"We've got guys who can play, guys who have played the game long enough to understand what we want to do on both ends of the floor. So we just look at the fact that we did not guard well. We hang our hat on defense and we did not do a good job at all at keeping them in front of us because we were over-rotating," said head coach Billy Wright. "That is something that we do not normally do."

On an evening when he was honored as the program leader for blocked shots, Brandon Gilbeck was impressive early on, as he scored the first nine points for the Leathernecks.

Kobe Webster halted a 7-0 Maverick run with a jumper in the lane, but it was not enough to slow down a hot Omaha offense that shot 60 percent in the first half from deep. After Webster's jumper, Omaha put together an 11-0 run that put the Mavericks ahead 36-17 with 5:19 in the first half.

Down 42-27, Kobe Webster found Delo Bruster with five seconds remaining to cut the lead to 12. With 10:50 remaining in the second half, Isaac Johnson and C.J. Duff hit back-to-back 3-pointers to pull WIU within 14 points.

The Leathernecks and Mavericks went back-and-forth for the remainder of the contest, with WIU finishing the scoring with five free throws in the final minute.

GAME NOTES:
-Kobe Webster led the Leathernecks with 18 points.
-Brandon Gilbeck finished with 16 points, two rebounds and a block.
-WIU ended with 32 points in the paint.
-The Leathernecks only committed 10 turnovers.
