Women’s Soccer Falls In League Opener at Oral Roberts

The Leathernecks dropped a 3-0 match on the road at the Golden Eagles.

TULSA, Okla. — Led by Madeline Edwards' six shots and three shots-on-goal, the Western Illinois women's soccer team dropped its Summit League opener (3-0) on the road at Oral Roberts (Sept. 29).
 
The Leathernecks were able to battle the Golden Eagles in a back-and-forth match until the 41st minute, when Oral Roberts netted a pair of goals off a 35-yard free kick and a 12-yard shot that was received off a pass (43'). At the half, Western Illinois fell into a 2-0 deficit.
 
Western Illinois saw an opportunity to get on the board in the opening minutes of the second half off a corner kick from Alexandra Siavelis, but the Golden Eagles responded with a goal off a pass from the left side that resulted in a touch from a yard out (50'). That goal put the Leathernecks in a 3-0 hole for the match.
 
Edwards tried to get the Purple and Gold on the board in the 70th, 77th and 90th minutes, but all of her shots were saved by the keeper. Along with Edwards' six shots and three on goal, Siavelis had a shot on goal.
 
Western Illinois (1-9-0, 0-1), returns home for a non-league match against in-state rival Illinois State Sunday (Oct. 1) for a 2 p.m. first touch.
