Leathernecks Drop Close Match Against Illinois State

Western Illinois dropped a 1-0 contest to the Redbirds.

MACOMB, Ill. — Western Illinois fell short in a close 1-0 contest to the visiting Illinois State Redbirds Sunday (Oct. 1) at John MacKenzie Alumni Field.

The Leathernecks (1-10-0) fell behind 1-0 in the 47th minute off a shot from inside the box that went in to the upper left-hand corner of the net. The Leathernecks had multiple scoring attempts, with the closest on being a shot by Bianca Romay that hit the crossbar in the 78th minute for the potential equalizer.

Towards the very end in the match, the Leathernecks had another scoring opportunity in the 89th minute after Stacie Wolfgram was able to get a breakaway, but her shot was saved.

Alexandra Siavelis had pair of shots with one on goal, while Wolfgram added a shot-on-goal for the Purple and Gold. Bianca Romay also had two shots, with Natalie Nalge and Cristina From recorded one each.

"Other than the 10 minutes to start the second half, we battled and defended pretty well," said Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson. "We looked like we tied it up but didn't get the call from the linesman. It was a good response considering we traveled back from Tulsa early Saturday morning. Illinois State picked up their energy to start the second half and were rewarded with a goal. If we can work this hard next Sunday, we will have a chance to pick up some points in our next match."

Western Illinois returns to the pitch Oct. 8 for a 1 p.m. first kick at home against Summit League opponent Fort Wayne.
