Women’s Soccer Edged 2-1 At Eastern Illinois

The women’s soccer team scored its first goal of the season but fell 2-1.

MACOMB, Ill. — Stacie Wolfgram was able to net the first goal of the season for the Western Illinois women's soccer program, but the team fell short at Eastern Illinois 2-1 (Sept. 10).

"We had two defensive errors and a lack of commitment in the first half that put us in a hole that we couldn't get out of," said Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson. "We played better in the second half but couldn't find the equalizer. We will have to get better at learning how to play two complete games on the weekends because that is how the upcoming Summit League schedule is set up."

Western Illinois (0-6-0), fell behind in the 30th minute after the Panthers netted a goal off a pass through the middle to go up 1-0.

After trailing 1-0 at the end of the first half, the Leathernecks came out on the offensive after Bianca Romay's shot was saved in the 50th minute. But just two minutes later, a header goal by Eastern Illinois put the Purple and Gold in a two-goal deficit.

The Leathernecks saw a huge opening in the Panthers defense and was almost able to cut the deficit to one in the 69th minute when Natalie Nagle's shot nailed the post. Western was eventually rewarded for the close chance nine minutes later when Wolfgram scored the first goal of the 2017 season for the Leathernecks (78') after she was able to beat the Panther's keeper and score in the upper right-hand corner of the net.

Trailing by a goal with just over 10 minutes to spare, Western continued to put pressure on EIU with a shot by Alexandra Siavelis and back-to-back shots by Emily Bollman, but could not find the back of the net.

Wolfgram's goal marks the first of her collegiate career at Western Illinois, and Bollman finished with a team-high two shots on goal.

Western Illinois closes out the six-game road slate at Ball State (Sept. 15) for a 5 p.m. kick. The second home match of the season takes place Sept. 17 against Chicago State. That match is slated for a 1 p.m. first touch at John MacKenzie Alumni Field.
