Women's Soccer Drops Road Contest At North Dakota

The Leathernecks fell 4-0 on the road.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Western Illinois dropped its first road contest at North Dakota in a 4-0 defeat to the Fighting Hawks on Sunday (Aug. 20) to fall to 0-2-0 overall in the season.

A pair of shots on goal by Bridget Schuler were saved by the keeper just 15 minutes into the first half. North Dakota, however was able to strike first and gather the momentum early after the first two goals came back-to-back beginning in the 24th minute, followed by another one in the 26th minute for North Dakota.

From there, another goal in the 34th minute put the Leathernecks in an early 3-0 hole before the conclusion of the first half after the ball found the top, right-hand corner of the net.

Madeline Edwards and Cristina From opened the second half with a shot each that wide and high over the net. Western then had another scoring opportunity when Mary Street and From's shots both went wide in the 56th and 64th minutes. North Dakota was able to respond and finish with the final goal of the match in the 69th minute to cap off the game, which gave Western a 4-0 defeat.

"It was a very poor start for us today," said Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson. "North Dakota outworked us at both ends in the first half. We recovered after halftime but it was way too late. There is hope in that as they showed something in the second half and refused to quit."

Madeline Edwards led the way with four shots, while Bridget Schuler finished with three and two on goal. Natalie Nagle also finished with two shots (both on goal) and Alexandra Siavelis and Natalie Sielaff both recorded a shot on goal.

The Leathernecks continue to look for their first win of the season with a road match this Thursday (Aug. 24) at SIU-Edwardsville. The first kick is scheduled for 7 p.m. (CT).
