The Western Illinois women's soccer team fell 1-0 to Northern Illinois Friday (Aug. 18). The game was called in the 72nd minute due lightning.

The game started back and forth as both squads found opportunities. In the ninth minute, Lauryn Peters out ran a NIU defender up the sideline for a shot from 21 yards out but was saved.

The biggest scoring opportunity for the Purple and Gold came in the 19th minute after NIU was called for a penalty inside the box that resulted in a Leatherneck penalty kick for Madeline Edwards, but the ball went high.

With the clock winding down under 10 seconds in the first half, NIU's Lauren Gierman found Delaney Loprieno off of a corner kick and she was able to head in into the back of the net.

At the 71:44 mark, the match was halted due to lighting and eventually concluded early.

"Unfortunately we gave up the goal at the end of the half and then didn't get the chance to get it back due to lightning. We just need to move on and play better on Sunday," said Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson.

Ines Palmiero Herrera defended three shots in net, while Edwards and Bridget Schuler led the way with a pair of shots and one on goal.  Western Illinois (0-1-0) hits the road for its second regular season contest at North Dakota on Sunday (Aug. 20) for a showdown scheduled for noon.
