Jackrabbits Edge Leathernecks in Pair of Softball Games Saturday

SDSU topped WIU 4-3 in game one before halting a Leatherneck comeback in game two and winning 6-5

BROOKINGS, S.D. – WIU softball dropped a pair of Summit League contests at South Dakota State Saturday (May 6) by a total of two runs. The Jackrabbits took game one in eight innings 4-3 before holding off a Leatherneck rally in game two and winning 6-5.

Western falls to 19-30 overall this season and 10-7 in league action after the doubleheader, while SDSU improves to 19-33 overall and 6-11 in league play.

GAME ONE: SDSU 4, WIU 3

The Jackrabbits grabbed an early 2-0 lead after the first three innings. SDSU's Ali Herdliska hit a solo home run to left center to open the scoring in the bottom of the first before Herdliska hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the 3rd for the Jacks' second run of the game.

Western then rallied to tie the game up in the top of the fourth inning. Kelsey Marlow led things off with a walk and advanced to second thanks to Holly Hoelting hitting a single to center field.

Both runners advanced when Hailey Duwa grounded out to second. Starting pitcher Emily Ira then drilled a 2-run single sending both Marlow and Hoelting in to score.

In the top of the sixth inning, Duwa hit a leadoff double to left field. Payton Abbott then laid down a sac bunt to move pinch runner Jasmine Lara over to third before Sam Ralphs hit a single up the middle, scoring Lara and giving the Leathernecks a 3-2 lead.

WIU's lead didn't last long though, as the Jacks tied the game back up in the bottom of the sixth. Erin Mullen hit an RBI double with two outs sending pinch runner Alexis Ray in to score and make it 3-3.

After a scoreless seventh, SDSU used a walk-off single to plate the game-winning run and take game one of the series, 4-3.

Ira picked up the loss, throwing all 7.1 innings. She gave up four runs (3 earned) on eight hits and struck out seven batters. Ralphs led WIU at the plate going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Ira led Western with two RBIs.

SDSU's Madison Hope came in to pitch for the Jackrabbits in the eighth and picked up the win. Starter Ashlyn Bender pitched the first seven innings, giving up three runs on eight hits.

Eight Jackrabbits recorded one hit, and Herdliska led the team with two RBIs.

GAME TWO: SDSU 6, WIU 5

South Dakota State took its momentum from game one into game two jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first. With one out, SDSU loaded the bases before a 2-run double and a 2-run single plated the Jacks' first four runs. A wild pitch allowed another SDSU run to cross the plate before the inning was over.

The Jackrabbits added to their lead in the third inning when they loaded the bases and Baily Janssen hit an RBI single. Abbott, who came in to pitch for WIU with two runners on base, then worked her way out of the jam after loading the bases again to leave the Jacks' lead at 6-0.

Western was able to score its first run of the game in the fifth when Marlow hit a sac fly to score Ralphs who had previously reached on a single to center. After a scoreless sixth inning, the Leathernecks began to rally.

With two outs and runners on first and second, Hoelting hit and RBI single through the left side sending Ralphs in to score her second run of the day, and Marlow over to second. A wild pitch allowed for both Marlow and pinch runner Brittanee Knepper to move into scoring position before Duwa hit a 2-run, 2-out single to left field, plating both Marlow and Knepper to make it a 2-run game at 6-4.

Halle Hollatz kept the rally alive with a single, and pinch runners Lara and Amanda Manton moved into scoring position on another wild pitch. After Abbott walked to load the bases, pinch hitter Aly Compton sent a single into right field plating Lara from third, but Manton was thrown out at home to end the rally and the game.

Starting pitcher Brooke Stulga, who pitched the first two innings, suffered the loss after giving up six runs on three hits. Abbott pitched the final four innings without giving up a run and only allowing three hits. She struck out five Jacks and without giving up a walk.

Hollatz led Western offensively, recording three hits. Hoelting was WIU's other multiple-hit performer with two. Duwa recorded a team-best two RBIs, while Ralphs scored a team-best two runs.
