Late Innings Hurt WIU in Loss to Oral Roberts

Preston Church pitched five strong innings while Mitch Ellis and Chris Tschida record two hits apiece.

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois tied the score in the fourth inning, but Oral Roberts scored five unanswered runs over the final three innings in a 6-1 decision on Friday afternoon (May 19). The Leathernecks dropped to 18-30 overall and 12-15 in The Summit League.

ORU (39-14, 25-4) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. A leadoff hit by pitch eventually scored on a wild pitch by Preston Church, but the senior left-hander kept the Golden Eagles in check after that.

In the second, ORU loaded the bases with no one out following two singles and a walk. Church worked out of the jam with no damage when he got back-to-back strikeouts and a flyball to end the inning. After a leadoff walk in the third, Church got a ground ball double play and would retire the next seven batters he faced in order.

Western put two on with two out in the first but could not get a run across. Chris Tschida led off the second with a single but was erased on a double play. The Leathernecks tied the score though in the fourth.

Adam McGinnis lined a leadoff double down the left field line, his team-leading 17th. He scored two batters later on Mitch Ellis' RBI single.

In the fifth, ORU brought in its usual game three series starter Miguel Ausua and he kept Western in check, allowing a walk and single over the final five innings.

Sam Cottingham-Beard came on in relief of Church in the sixth. He got a called third strike to end a scoring threat when ORU had two in scoring position with two outs. A leadoff walk in the seventh eventually scored on a RBI single from Nick Roark. ORU added two runs in the eighth inning and used a two-out double to score two more runs in the ninth.

Ellis finished with two hits and an RBI. Tschida had another two-hit game, and moved him to three hits shy of 200 in his career.

Church fanned six batters in his five innings of work, allowing one run on three hits and walking two. In the final home start of his career, Church's six strikeouts were the second-most this year. Cottingham-Beard (1-3) was charged for five runs in his four innings of work.

Dylan Snypes had three hits and three RBI for ORU. Josh McMinn allowed a run on six hits in four innings. Ausua improved to 10-2 this year working the final five innings.

The regular season finale will take place on Saturday afternoon (May 19) at 1 p.m. Western will honor the program's 10 seniors during a pre-game ceremony.
