Western Illinois Loses Finale at NDSU

Mitch Ellis has two hits and two RBI, Adam McGinnis also with two hits

FARGO, N.D. – Western Illinois jumped out to an early lead but North Dakota State rallied in the middle innings and took game three of the weekend series 6-3 on Sunday afternoon (May 14) at Newman Outdoor Field.

Adam McGinnis moved back into a share of The Summit League lead with his 16th double of the year during the first inning, but he was stranded in scoring position. Western (18-28 overall, 12-13 Summit League) got on the board though the next inning, its first lead of the weekend.

Mitch Ellis walked with one out, stole second and scored on a RBI single from Roman Visintine.

NDSU threatened with two hits in the first but Pete Minella worked out of the jam. The sophomore left-hander got an inning-ending double play in the second. The Bison tied the game in the fourth.

Logan Busch was hit by a pitch, took third on a single and scored when Matt Elsenpeter lined one that deflected off a Leatherneck player and rolled into centerfield. Minella got out of the jam when he got another inning-ending double play to keep it a 1-1 game.

In the fifth Mason Pierzchalski lined a two-run single, then a RBI double gave NDSU a 4-1 lead. Western got those two runs back in the sixth.

McGinnis walked with one out, then two batters later Deion Thompson singled and took second on the throw. Ellis lined a double to right-centerfield to plate both runners for a 4-3 score.

Another run-scoring single for NDSU (27-22, 17-10) in the sixth made it 5-3. Western threatened in the seventh. Johnathan Fleek doubled, then two batters later McGinnis drew a two-out walk. An infield popup ended Western's threat. A two-out RBI double for NDSU in the seventh accounted for the final margin.

Minella, in his first career weekend start, worked a career-high 4.2 innings, allowing three earned runs – the first earned runs given up by the sophomore left-hander in Summit League play this year. He suffered his first loss of the year (3-1).

McGinnis went 2-for-3 with a walk. Ellis also had two hits and a walk.

Jordan Harms (3-7) allowed three runs on six hits in 5.2 innings. Four Bison recorded a multi-hit game. Kevin Folman worked the ninth for his eighth save.

Western closes out the regular season with a home series against regular season champion Oral Roberts. Game one of the series on Thursday (May 18) is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
