Western Drops Two on Opening Day of Coach B Classic

Leathernecks back in action tomorrow at 9 a.m.

CABONDALE, Ill. – The Western Illinois softball team opened play at the Coach B Classic on Saturday (March 4) with a pair of losses to hosts Southern Illinois and Murray State. With the losses, the Leathernecks drop to 4-11 on the season.
 
GAME ONE:  Southern Illinois 3, Western Illinois 2
 
Both teams remained scoreless until the top of the fourth when the Salukis took a 1-0 lead following an RBI double from Merri Ann Patterson.
 
In the bottom of the sixth, Rachel Beatty second base on an error and moved to third following a sacrifice bunt from Nina Maggio. The next at bat, Kelsey Marlow hit an RBI single to score Beatty and tie the game 1-1.
 
The next inning, Western sent SIU down in order to keep the game even. In the bottom of the seventh, Payton Abbott drew a leadoff walk and moved to second following a sacrifice bunt from Emily Ira, but the winning run was left aboard as the game went into extras.
 
In the top of the eighth, the Salukis were able to score two runs to take a 3-1 lead. In the bottom of the eighth, per the international tiebreaker rule, Jasmine Lara began the inning on second base. With two outs, Maggio hit an RBI single that scored Lara and put Western within one. However, the rally fell short as SIU hung on to win 3-2.
 
Three Leathernecks garnered base hits in the loss, while Maggio and Marlow each had one RBI. Ira pitched all eight innings, giving up three earned runs, three strikeouts, and walking one.
 
GAME TWO: Murray State 4, Western Illinois 3
 
The Leathernecks struck first in the opening inning following a leadoff single from Beatty. She then was brought home when Holly Hoelting hit an RBI single to give Western a 1-0 lead.
 
In the bottom of the second, Murray State retaliated with a two-run home run to go up 2-1.
 
Maggio drew a walk to open up the fifth inning and moved to second following a sac bunt from Marlow. She then worked her way across home plate following a Racer error and tied the game. The next at bat, Hoelting launched her third home run of the season and gave Western a 3-2 lead.
 
The Racers then hit their second home run of the game in the next inning to take a 4-3 lead. The Leathernecks were unable to respond as they dropped the decision Murray State.
 
Hoelting went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Beatty went 2-for-4 with one run scored. Brooke Stulga got the start in the circle, pitching six innings with three earned runs, two walks and two strikeouts.
 
Western closes action at the Coach B Classic tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. against Northern Illinois, followed by a matchup against UIC at 11 a.m.
