Leathernecks Fall Short In First Meeting At Oral Roberts

Western Illinois fell 3-0 to the Golden Eagles

TULSA, Okla. – Western Illinois dropped the first game of the series at Oral Roberts 3-0 after runs in the fifth and sixth innings Friday (March 31).

The Leathernecks (6-17 Overall, 3-4 Summit League) got things started with back-to-back singles up the middle by Chris Tschida and Jonathan Fleek in the top of the second. Western was able to load the bases with one out after Deion Thompson was walked. The Golden Eagles (18-7, 7-0), however, were able to leave the WIU baserunners stranded and secure two more strikeouts to end the half inning.

In the bottom of the second with two outs, Oral Roberts singled up the middle to get a runner on base, but the Leathernecks were able to secure the last out of the inning courtesy of an Ian Koch breaking ball that struck out the batter swinging.

With one out and a runner on first in the bottom of the fourth, the Golden Eagles launched a ball to the warning track in right field, but Steve McShane was there for the catch. Tschida followed up with an unassisted out at first to close out the fourth inning and keep the game scoreless.

Oral Roberts got two runners in scoring position in the fifth following a single to left field and a runner hit by a pitch. A sacrifice bunt advanced the Golden Eagle runners to second and third. The Leathernecks then loaded the bases with one out following an intentional walk. A single down the right field line gave the Golden Eagles their first RBI of the game to take a 1-0 lead. The Leathernecks, however, were able to close out the inning with a double play.

Adam McGinnis got things started in the sixth with a single to left center and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, but a pair of strikeouts capped off by a groundout closed out the half inning.

The Golden Eagles loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the sixth. A sacrifice fly sent the baserunner home to put Western in a 2-0 deficit. That play preceded a single up the middle by the Golden Eagles to go up 3-0. ORU got a single off a bunt to load the bases again, but a fly out to Roman Visintine closed out the inning.

A pair of strikeouts by Connor Rektorski in the bottom of the seventh kept Oral Roberts scoreless for the inning. Western found some momentum in the top of the eighth when Drue Galassi came in to pinch hit and doubled to right center.  A ground ball advanced Galassi to third with two outs, but the Golden Eagles kept Western scoreless with a fly out.

The Leathernecks held ORU scoreless in the bottom of the eighth to put themselves in position in the top of the ninth after Jonathan Fleek was hit by a pitch. Fleek then took second off a wild pitch, but Oral Roberts was able to get a strikeout to close out the game.

Koch (1-2) and Rektorski both led the way with a pair of strikeouts, while Galassi, McGinnis, Tschida and Fleek all recorded a hit.

Western Illinois continues the series with a Saturday (April 1) matchup at Oral Roberts. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
