Baseball Loses Opener at Dayton

Ian Koch pitched 6.2 innings in the defeat, Nick Schrader had a hit and two assists at second base.

DAYTON, Ohio – Western Illinois opened its weekend series in Ohio with a 6-0 loss at Dayton on Friday afternoon (March 10).

The Leathernecks opened with a base runner in the first inning when Roman Visintine drew a one-out walk, but he was erased when caught stealing. Dayton jumped out to an early lead in its half of the frame.

With a runner at third, Ian Koch got a strikeout. Another walk put runners on the corners. Koch got a ground ball back to the mound and he narrowly missed turning a 1-6-3 inning-ending double play, which allowed the Flyers to plate a run. A walk and balk put two runners in scoring position, then a single through the right side made it 3-0 Dayton.

Johnathan Fleek was hit by a pitch with two outs in the second, and Western had another base runner in the third with Deion Thompson's leadoff single, however both runners were stranded on base.

Koch kept Dayton off the board in the fifth when with two outs an error and two stolen bases put a runner at third. Koch got a groundout to end the threat.

Nick Schrader singled to start the sixth inning but he was eventually erased on a double play. Koch responded by striking out the Flyers (4-7 overall) in order in the sixth. The next inning, a two out rally put the game away.

A pair of groundouts to Schrader at second base quickly made it two away. Dayton then used two singles and a walk to load the bases. A single and error allowed two runs to come in and make it 5-0. Nate Westfahl entered in relief. A walk loaded the bases, then the Flyers made it 6-0 following a run scoring on a wild pitch.

Cord Church reached on a one-out error in the ninth, however a ground ball double play ended Western's comeback attempt.

Koch (0-1) was charged for six runs on four singles in 6.2 innings, and the sophomore struck out five with five walks. Westfahl fanned two with a walk in 1.1 innings of relief.

Schrader and Thompson accounted for Western's (0-11) two hits.

Tyler Henry (2-0) pitched the complete game shutout, striking out four with one walk. Leadoff hitter Mitch Coughlin scored two of Dayton's six runs.
