Kobe Webster's 27 points and eight assists lead Leathernecks past Jaguars

The Leathernecks never trailed by more than two points and led for over 34 minutes of the contest.

MACOMB, Ill.- Kobe Webster put together a performance a freshman in the Summit League has not done thus far in 2017-18, netting 27 points (10-14 from the field) and dishing eight assists, while only committing one turnover in 40 minutes of action.

"I think he had a little edge on him tonight, being from Indianapolis. We just put him in situations where he could shoot it or drive it, and he made the right decisions. And you look at his eight assists and one turnover, and that's even more impressive in 40 minutes," said head coach Billy Wright.

The Leathernecks (5-1) won the game 90-77 over IUPUI (2-3) on Tuesday evening inside Western Hall.

"It's our defense, hats off to our guys, they're committed to it. We work at it, and our assistant coaches do a great job with scouting film and giving us an idea of what to expect. And then we go out and execute it. Give our kids credit because it's hard work and a lot of preparation," said Wright.

After missing its first three 3-point attempts of the game, Western made 10-of-14 trifectas in the game, including shooting 54.5 percent (6-11) from deep in the second half.

Brandon Gilbeck downed the first bucket for the Leathernecks, with a hook shot in the paint. Kobe Webster then put in three trifectas in two minutes, shots that contributed to an 11-0 Leatherneck run. With 9:37 on the clock, Webster found Isaac Johnson in the corner for a 3-pointer that pushed the Western lead to 13 points.

After three free throws from IUPUI's Aaron Brennan, the Purple and Gold tacked on 12 more points that put the Leathernecks up 23 with 5:24 remaining. In that span, Dalan Ancrum, Jalen Morgan and Webster each claimed four points.

The Leathernecks weren't done there as Webster found Dalan Ancrum behind the arc for three and Delo Bruster shimmed and scored on a fadeaway 13-foot jumper that put the Leathernecks out front 40-17.

With 63 ticks remaining until halftime, Webster drove and found Morgan under the rim to give Webster seven assists in the first half.

Bruster dished the ball to Ancum on the Leathernecks first possession of the second half for a 3-pointer that pushed Ancrum's point total to double digits with 19:46 in the second half.

The second half featured a lot of back-and-forth action, as the Leathernecks and Jaguars traded buckets after the break.

Ancrum notched 12 of his 19 points in the second half, going 5-for-6 from the field including two 3-pointers. Gilbeck pulled down seven second half rebounds and swatted four Jaguar shots that helped seal the win for WIU.

With four and a half minutes remaining, Western was able to halt a 12-2 IUPUI run by two C.J. Duff free throws and jumpers from Ancrum and Jeremiah Usiosefe. The lead never fell below 13 for the Leathernecks as they glided to a 90-77 win.

Western gets back to the court on Dec. 2 at home against Miami (Ohio) at 7 p.m.
