Leathernecks Outlasted In Double-Overtime Thriller

The Leathernecks were led by Dalan Ancrum's 22 points and seven rebounds

MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois came up just short on Saturday evening (Dec. 2) against Miami (Ohio) in a thrilling double-overtime contest. Down 73-70 with eight seconds to go, Dalan Ancrum pulled up from 26 feet and netted the 3-pointer to tie up the game with six seconds left. On the ensuing possession, Miami's Darrian Ringo pulled from the right wing and made the 3-pointer with 0.7 seconds left for the win.

"We fought hard. At the end of the first regulation, when there was about seven minutes to go, we were down by six or seven. Six or seven points in this game, in a possession-oriented game, felt like 10," said head coach Billy Wright. "Our kids, to their credit, they fought back and got stop after stop to send it into overtime. There were some plays and possessions that we could've closed it out, and that's the disappointment."

The Leathernecks jumped out to an 8-4 lead after Brandon Gilbeck netted a hook shot in the lane that was followed by an Ancrum three. Midway through the first half, the Redhawks went on a 7-0 run that extended a lead of their own to five points.

Down seven points with three minutes in the first half, Ancrum made a moved past a Redhawk defender and made a shot behind the arc to give him 14 points in the half and to cut the Rehawk lead to four at the break.

For the first 10 minutes of the second half, the game was back-and-forth as the Redhawk lead remained between six and 10 points.

Down 10 points with 10 minutes remaining, WIU went on a 13-2 run that gave it its first lead since the 13:41 minute mark in the first half. Gilbeck hit two shots in back-to-back possessions that were followed by two Jeremiah Usiosefe free throws and a Kobe Webster 3-pointer.

With 1:36 to go in regulation, Webster found Usiosefe on a pick-and-roll that resulted in a layup for the Leathernecks' lead. At the 55-second mark, Jalen Adaway was fouled by Gilbeck and landed hard, resulting in Adaway's departure from the game for a possession. Jake Wright shot what would have been Adaway's free throws and made one out of two to tie the game.

Webster came down on the ensuing possession, dribbled behind his back and made a 3-pointer from the top of the key to put the Leathernecks up by three points with 29 seconds remaining. Nike Sibande answered for the Redhawks and made a 3-pointer with 18 seconds remaining.

Webster shot a 3-pointer with 12 seconds remaining that was rebounded by C.J. Duff. The Leathernecks could not net two tip-in attempts, sending the game into overtime.

Ancrum stole the first Redhawk possession of overtime and scored in transition to put the Purple and Gold up by two. After the Redhawks went one of two on their free throws, Webster netted a pair of free throws to extend the lead to three points. Isaiah Coleman-Lands answered the Leathernecks points with a 3-pointer of his own.

Webster put in another two points for the Leathernecks with 2:16 to go to break the 63-63 tie.

After a Duff free throw that put Western ahead two,  Adaway made two free throws that tied up the with 17 ticks remaining.  The Redhawks missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer that sent the game into the second over time.

Jalen Morgan had four points in double overtime, which led the Leathernecks in the fourth period.

"It's disappointing, it hurts right now, but it's not the end of the world," Wright said. "We have a long season. We have tomorrow off, then we get back in the gym Monday to get ready for a tough opponent coming in on Wednesday."

The Leathernecks are back in action from Western Hall at 7 p.m. on Wednesday (Dec. 6) in a non-conference bout against American.
