Leathernecks Fall In Ames To Iowa State 70-45

The Cyclones put together a 41-point second half to top Western.

AMES, Iowa- The Western Illinois men's basketball team (4-1) lost its first contest of the 2017-18 campaign 70-45 against Iowa State (4-2) in Hilton Coliseum. The Leathernecks were only down four points at the half, but Iowa State put together a 41-point second half that outlasted Western Illinois.

"Their pressure and our turnovers cost us. Give them (Iowa State) credit. They are long and athletic. Their pressure really bothered us as the game went on. It showed in the turnovers and the transition defense," said head coach Billy Wright. "We fought for 20 minutes but it is a 40 minute game and we have to have guys give us a lift off of the bench and we have to play better against a team like this."

The Leathernecks kept the game close early, after Western stopped a 8-0 Cyclone run to begin the game to make the score 8-6. Gilbeck put the Leathernecks on the board with two early jumpers.

Down by four with 10:59 to go in the first half, Kobe Webster hit a fade away jumper followed by two Dalan Ancrum buckets to give the Leathernecks a 14-12 lead. The Cyclones then put together a 12-0 run to take the lead at 24-14. Webster found Jeremiah Usiosefe behind the arc to stop the Cyclone run and to cut the lead to seven points.

Iowa State hit a three to answer the Leatherneck bucket with 1:19 in the first half. Ancrum manufactured two trifectas in the final 90 seconds to pull the Leathernecks within four to close out the half, 29-25.

Iowa State started the second half on a 5-0 run before Usiosefe hit a momentum killing three point shot with 16:36 minutes to play. The Cyclones put together a 13-0 run in the middle of the half that ignited over 13,000 fans in attendance.

Gilbeck and Usiosefe each netted two points in the final two minutes to push the Leathernecks to 45 points.
