Western Rolls Past Chicago State In Road Contest

The Leathernecks were led by the 21 points and eight steals from Emily Clemens.

CHICAGO, Ill. — Back-to-back road games in two days didn't faze the Fighting Leatherneck women's basketball team, as they were able to defeat Chicago State 83-45 Wednesday night (Nov. 22).

"I was proud of our team for taking care of business tonight," said head coach JD Gravina. "After the emotional win at Illinois, this could have been a major trap game, especially considering our performance last year. Our team came out active and aggressive, and our press sped them up a little and helped us get the game played at our pace."

Western Illinois jumped out to a 16-2 lead to force a Chicago State timeout after back-to-back threes from Taylor Higginbotham and Michelle Farrow. Higginbotham was perfect from beyond the arc in the first quarter, going 2-for-2 to help the Leathernecks get a 29-10 lead after one.

The lead eventually built up to 49-21 at the half off seven three-pointers from Western.

A short run by Chicago State made it 58-29, but the Leathernecks were able to weather the storm to build a 61-36 lead after three quarters of play. From there, the Purple and Gold were able to cruise to an 83-45 decision for its fifth win of the season.

Emily Clemens finished with 21 points, a career-high eight steals and six assists, while Higginbotham added 14 and Hanneman chipped in 10. Krishna Merriman followed with a new career-high of nine points, with Morgan Blumer also adding nine.

Western Illinois returns to action following Thanksgiving break this upcoming Sunday (Nov. 25) against Milwaukee. Tipoff is set for 4:30 p.m. inside Western Hall.
