Men's Soccer Travels To Omaha For Road Matchup

The Leathernecks look to continue their undefeated league streak.

MACOMB, Ill.— Western Illinois travels on the road to battle Omaha in a Summit League contest Saturday (Oct. 21) at 2 pm. The Leathernecks look to continue their undefeated streak in league play.
 
A LOOK AT YOUR LEATHERNECKS:
Western Illinois sits tied for first in the standings with a 2-0 record in league play. Drew Whalen is tied for first amongst the entire league with eight goals. He ranks second in the league with 17 points and 39 shots.
 
Fernando Pacheco is currently third in The Summit League with seven goals and his 14 points rank fourth.
 
LAST TIME OUT:
The Western Illinois men's soccer team (4-7) dropped a match at home against Valparaiso (7-5-1), 5-2, on Thursday (Oct. 12). The Leathernecks struck first, but were unable to maintain momentum as Valpo put together three straight goals. Drew Whalen scored for the Western and has now scored in six straight matches.
 
n the 10th minute, Angelo Amato put the first goal in for the Leathernecks, as he headed a ball from Amadeo Carbo that was headed in front of the goalkeeper. Valpo responded as Adan Garcia put in one of his three goals on the afternoon. The Leathernecks had a chance to go ahead in the 23rd minute as Alejandro Pacheco nearly scored as the ball his the crossbar. Valparaiso took advantage of a free kick from 24 yards out as Garcia scored.
 
Another opportunity came for the Leathernecks as Armel Kouassi crossed the ball to Drew Whalen who dove and headed the ball just wide of the net. Valpo was able to get on the board early in the second half as Jordan James scored his third goal of the season to put the score at 3-1. Western rebounded in the 73rd minute as Whalen took a pass from Ben Fiddes and tapped the ball into the back of the net to pull the Leathernecks within one goal. Valparaiso scored two late goals to put the match out of reach. Garcia completed his hat trick in the 87th minute off of an assist by James and Jonas Engler socred his third goal of the season in the 88th.
 
SCOUTING THE MAVERICKS:
Omaha enters the contest with a 7-4-2 overall record, with both ties in Summit League action (0-0-2). Elvir Ibisevic sits atop the league standings in points with 17 and is tied for first with eight goals. Fellow teammate Xavier Gomez has a league-high six assists this season.
 
In the last meeting, the Western Illinois men's soccer program dropped a 2-1 contest against the Omaha Mavericks in Summit League play on Saturday, Oct. 22 at John MacKenzie Alumni Field. The match saw all three of its goals scored in the first half.
 
The all-time series is tied 2-2-1.
 
LOOKING AHEAD:
Western Illinois continues its road play against league opponent Oral Roberts on Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. That match precedes a pair of home matches at John MacKenzie Alumni Field against Bradley (Oct. 31) and Denver (Nov. 4) to close out the regular season.
