Volleyball Falls On The Road At Denver

Jaime Johnson led the team with 13 assists

Denver, Colo. – The Western Illinois volleyball team (6-14) fell 3-0 on the road to the Denver Pioneers (13-5) on Friday, Oct. 13, 25-11, 25-23, 25-18. The Leathernecks battled tough in the second set, but were unable to tie up the match.

"We saw some good moments tonight but we still continue to struggle with unforced errors and keeping things in the defensive system," said head coach Kelly Richardson. "We will continue focusing on our attention to detail and are anxious to get back on the court in Fargo, N.D. tomorrow."

The Pioneers came out early and jumped out to quick 8-4 lead and the Leathernecks could not find momentum in the first set. Shiah Sanders and Mackenzie Steckler both recorded two kills in the set, but Western fell 25-11.

Western found more success in the second set as the Purple and Gold tied up the set at six after being down 3-3. A Shalyn Greenhaw kill and two Denver attacking errors built a three-point lead for the Leathernecks, at 13-10. It was back-and-forth in the middle of the set as both teams fought hard. The Pioneers took two of the last three points in the set to win, 25-23.

In the third set, Western was able to take a 3-2 lead, but Denver won eight of the next 11 points to go up 12-6. Down 20-9, the Leathernecks won the next seven of eight points to make the set 21-16. Tine Boe recorded the final kill for the Pioneers as Denver won, 25-18.

The Leathernecks look to rebound against the Bison of North Dakota on Sunday, Oct. 15. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
