Omaha Tops Western Illinois Men’s Basketball Saturday in Summit League Action

Miklusak picked up his fifth double-double of the year with 17 points and 14 rebounds

OMAHA, Neb. – Western Illinois men's basketball dropped its Summit League contest at Omaha Saturday evening (Jan. 14) 86-72 inside Baxter Arena.

After Omaha led by 14 points early in the second half, the Leathernecks cut the Mavericks' lead to five points midway through the second half, 58-53. WIU was able to get over the hump and UNO pulled away, improving to 10-9 overall and 3-3 in league play. Western Illinois falls to 3-3 in league action and 6-11 overall.

"I'm just proud of our guys. They could've caved with the adversity, but we cut it to single digits and had a chance down the stretch. A couple made shots here, if we didn't turn the ball over here and there, who knows, we could've gotten out of here with a win," said head coach Billy Wright. "We knew we'd be facing adversity from beginning to end. We just have a slight flu bug going on. We have to make sure we get rid of that virus, and get ready for a tough team next week."

Senior Mike Miklusak recorded his fifth double-double of the season with 17 points and 14 rebounds. His 14 board tied a career best.

Also scoring 17 points was junior Dalan Ancrum who played 30 minutes off of the bench. He shot 6-of-11 from the field and went 3-of-4 from long range.

Sophomore center Bradon Gilbeck finished one rebounds shy of a double-double, scoring 12 points and pulling down nine rebounds. He also had four blocks.

Western's leading scorer Garret Covington, who did not play in the second half due to illness, finished with eight points.

Western, who has shot really well from beyond the arc nearly all of Summit League play, was only able to make six of its 21 attempts from three. Omaha made 51.7 percent (15-29) of its 3-point attempts and 40.9 percent of its attempts from the field.

The Mavericks were led by Marcus Tyus and Mitch Hahn who finished with 25 and 24 points, respectively. 18 of Hahn's 24 points came from six 3-pointers.

The Leathernecks return home for their next contest, a league tilt against North Dakota State on Saturday, Jan. 21. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. and the game is scheduled to air live on ESPN3.
