Leathernecks Fall 2-0 at Western Michigan

The women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 match on the road at WMU.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Leathernecks fell 2-0 at Western Michigan in their fifth regular season match on Sunday, Sept. 4.

"I'm proud of the way we played today. We battled well with one of the better teams in the MAC," said Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson. "Western Michigan is a very skillful and well-coached team. We had our chances to tie the match in the first half, but their goalkeeping and backline defense was solid."

Western fell behind early after a 13th minute goal by the Broncos' Emma Kahn, who scored deep in the box on the left side of the goal. The Leathernecks had four shots within the first 45 minutes, but were in a one-goal deficit entering halftime.

In the second half, Western Michigan scored again in the 63rd minute off a shot that hit the crossbar and into the net. The Broncos would hold on to the 2-0 lead as both teams went scoreless in the remainder of the second half.

Inas Palmiero Herrara started in goal, recording eight saves in the match, which is a career high. Madeline Edwards led the Leathernecks with six shots, which is also a season high. She also had one shot on goal. Alanna Lalich also added two shots, while Cristina From recorded one.

The Leathernecks recorded nine saves compared to the Broncos' two. Western Michigan outshot Western 20-9, and recorded more corner kicks (4-2).

Western Illinois (1-4-0) returns to John MacKenzie Alumni Field Friday, Sept. 9 at 4 p.m. to take on North Dakota. The match will be streamed on Leatherneck All-Access, and live stats will be available.
