Leathernecks Fall At Drake

Western Illinois dropped an 0-2 contest to the Bulldogs.

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 match at Drake Wednesday, Sept. 14 in Des Moines, Iowa.

The Leathernecks fall to 1-5-1 overall while the Bulldogs improve to 7-0-1.

"We battled hard and kept them in front of us until late in the game. Our back line was very organized and did a tremendous job against a quality side," said Director of Soccer Dr.  Eric Johnson. "We need to be better on the ball when we win it back if we want to create more chances to score."

After a scoreless first half, the Leathernecks fell behind with a 72nd minute header goal off a cross deep into the box by the Bulldogs. Eight minutes later, an 80th minute final goal put Drake up 2-0 after a cross deep inside the box, which was then put into the back of the net.

Overall, Drake outshot Western 17-3, and held a 4-1 advantage on corner kicks. Alexandra Siavelis led the team in total shots with two, as well as two shots on goal. The third team shot was recorded by Kayla McCormick. In goal, Ines Palmiero Herrera totaled four saves in the match.

The Leathernecks will be back in action against Northern Iowa, which will take place Sunday, Sept. 18 at 1 p.m. in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
