Leathernecks Drop Road Match at Northern Iowa

Western fell 3-0 at the Panthers Sunday, Sept. 18.

MACOMB, Ill. – The Fighting Leatherneck women's soccer team fell 3-0 on the road at Northern Iowa Sunday, Sept. 18.

"Our effort was good but our inability to connect passes when we won the ball really hurt us in the match," said Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson. "We spent most of the match winning the possession and then giving it right back."

Western had three shot attempts in the first half, including one by Alexandra Siavelis in the 33rd minute, but was saved by the UNI keeper.

The Panthers were able to go up 1-0 after a goal in the 35th minute by UNI's Brynell Yount. The score would remain the same as the Leathernecks went into halftime with a one-goal deficit.

In the second half, the Leathernecks fell behind after two quick goals from Northern Iowa. Yount scored her second goal in the 67th minute off a rebound, followed by a penalty kick goal in the 68th minute to go up 3-0 and close out the match.

Western Illinois was led by two shots each from Madeline Edwards, Emily Bollman and Haley Richards. Both Bollman and Siavelis recorded a shot on goal. In net, both Ines Palmiero Herrera (five saves) and Lexi Harris (six saves) saw in-game action.

The Leathernecks (1-6-1) return to action Sept. 25 at John MacKenzie Alumni Field against Missouri State for a 1 p.m. kickoff, where the match will be aired on ESPN3. Following that, they open Summit League play at home against Denver Sept. 30.
