Bollman's Game-Winner Lifts WIU Past Missouri State

Leathernecks score 2-1 overtime win over the Bears

MACOMB, Ill. – An early overtime game-winner by Emily Bollman on Sunday (Sept. 25) sealed a 2-1 home win over Missouri State for the Western Illinois women's soccer program.

"It was an exciting game and a great win by our ladies today," said Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson. "It was a total team effort with some outstanding performances from several players. If we can continue to improve and work as hard as we did today, we will see success in our league matches."

After a scoreless match throughout the first half, the two regulation goals came within the final minutes of play.

A corner kick by Stacie Wolfgram set up an 87th minute goal by Bianca Romay. The corner kick was deflected by a defender inside the box, and Romay was there for the rebound shot to put Western up 1-0 in the final minutes.

The Bears, however, scored an equalizer in the final seconds to send it to regulation. Missouri State's Ashley Coonfield received a pass from Olina Einarsdottir, and was able to take advantage of the open opportunity. Coonfield's shot slowly rolled into the net (89:55) as the final five seconds winded down in regulation to send it to overtime.

Western Illinois wasted no time following the short break, and Bollman scored the game-winner at 1:34 into the overtime period, her first of the season. She was able to dribble past the opposing keeper off an assist from Nicole Beer, and hook the ball into the right-hand side of the net for the win.

The Purple and Gold finished with eight total team shots, compared to the Bears' nine. Missouri State also recorded six corner kicks to the Leathernecks' five.

Individually, Bollman led the team with three shots, two shots on goal and the game-winner, as Romay finished with the 87th minute goal. Madeline Edwards also recorded three shots in the match.

In goal, Jennifer Currie recorded four saves in 89 minutes of action, and Lexi Harris took over for the final 1:39 of the match.

Western Illinois (2-6-1) will now shift its focus for the Summit League opener against Denver. The match is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 30 at John MacKenzie Alumni Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m., and the match will be broadcasted on Leatherneck All-Access.
