Western Falls in Straight Sets to IUPUI

Shalyn Greenhaw collected her fourth double-double of the season

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Western Illinois volleyball team fell on the road in straight sets to IUPUI Friday evening (Sept. 30). With the loss, the Leathernecks fall to 4-15 (1-3) on the year while the Jaguars improve to 6-12 (2-1). Shalyn Greenhaw grabbed her fourth double-double of the season with a team-leading 12 kills and 14 digs, hitting .219 on the night.

"We saw some really good moments tonight, we just have to keep working on our consistency. We gave away too many unforced errors, and ultimately that comes from us being timid," said head coach Kelly Richardson. "We continue to learn about the mental tenacity we need to have for a complete match, and as we continue to learn, we'll continue to grow."

IUPUI started off strong as they took a 7-2 lead early in the first set. A kill and a service ace from Greehnhaw gave the Leathernecks two quick points later in the set to trail by three, 10-7. The Jaguars broke away with five straight points late in the set to lead 24-15. A kill by Shiah Sanders and a Jaguar error made it 24-17, but IUPUI would come up with a kill to take set one 25-17.

Both sides traded points back and forth through almost the entirety of the second set. IUPUI went on a 3-0 run to lead 8-6 and then added two more points to lead 10-8. Western responded with three straight points that included a kill from Greenhaw and a service ace from Claire Grove to lead 12-11. Another kill from Greenhaw gave the Leathernecks a two point lead, but the Jaguars went on a 5-0 spurt to lead 19-16. WIU took the lead back 22-21 to force an IUPUI timeout following two Jaguar errors and a kill by Lexi Kolschefski. IUPUI then came out of the timeout to score four quick points and hung on for a 25-22 set two victory.

The Jaguars' momentum continued into the third set as they led 10-4 early on. Western was able to cut its deficit to two following consecutive kills from Greenhaw and two service aces from Abby Skryd. IUPUI then built a comfortable 14-9 lead following the Leathernecks' run. Down 18-12, Greenhaw came up with back-to-back kills to try and keep Western alive, but the Jaguars used another 4-0 run to lead 22-14. IUPUI looked to put the set away 24-15, but WIU would not back down as they scored three straight points. An error then gave IUPUI the set point as they took set three 25-18 and the match 3-0.

The Purple and Gold look to bounce back this Sunday as they host North Dakota State inside Western Hall at 1 p.m.
