Volleyball Falls to Butler on Final Day of Hawkeye Classic

Western hosts Eastern Illinois for the home opener on Tuesday (Sept. 6)

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Western Illinois volleyball team closed out play at the Hawkeye Classic on Saturday (Sept. 3) where they fell 3-0 to Butler. With the loss, the Leathernecks fall to 0-6 on the year while the Bulldogs improve to 4-4.

It was Butler who got out to a quick start in the opening set, as they claimed a 25-9 decision over Western Illinois. The teams remained close in the early portions of the set, as two kills from Mackenzie Steckler and one from Krishna Merriman pulled the Leathernecks within two at 7-5. From there, Butler went on a run to build a 19-9 advantage. Western could never cut the deficit down as they dropped the opening set.

In the middle set, Butler jumped out to an 8-4 lead. Kills from Shiah Sanders and Shalyn Greenhaw cut the lead down to two. Western continued to keep things close at 11-9 following two kills from Claire Grove. The momentum could not be sustained as the Bulldogs were able to pull ahead and take the set 25-14.

Butler built an early 11-5 lead in the third set. The Leathernecks grabbed two back-to-back points following a Greenhaw kill and a Butler error, but the Bulldogs went on a 5-0 run to pull ahead 16-7. Western struggled to keep things within reach throughout the rest of the set, but did not back down as Greenhaw and Steckler contributed with late kills. The late push was not enough as Butler claimed the third set 25-16 and the match 3-0.

Greenhaw led the Leathernecks with nine kills. Kaili Simmons was the team leader in digs with 13, while Abby Skryd led with 12 assists.

The Leathernecks have a quick turnaround as they play host to Eastern Illinois for their home opener on Tuesday (Sept. 6) at 7 p.m. inside Western Hall.
