2016 'Day in the Life'
MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois volleyball team continues Summit League play with a pair of matches this weekend. On Friday (Sept. 30) at 5 p.m., the Leathernecks play at IUPUI. Western then plays host to North Dakota State on Sunday (Oct. 2) at 1 p.m.
 
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS: IUPUI sits at 5-12 on the year with a 1-1 league mark. On the opening weekend of league play, the Jaguars swept South Dakota State 3-0 before falling to North Dakota State 0-3. IUPUI has also recorded wins over Green Bay, McNeese State, Central Michigan and Ball State. Kori Waelbroeck has recorded 206 kills and ranks third in the league with 3.55 kills/set. Defensively, Abby Boatman has compiled 61 blocks, good for 1.05 blocks/set.
 
The Bison are undefeated in Summit League play with a 2-0 record (4-11 overall). In conference play, NDSU beat Oral Roberts 3-1 and broomed IUPUI 3-0. The Bison's other two victories are over Montana (3-0) and Bradley (3-0). Hadley Steffen is the team leader in kills (146), while Brianna Rasmusson leads with 487 assists.
 
SERIES HISTORIES: IUPUI holds a 26-11 advantage over the Leathernecks. Last season, Western dropped both meetings to the Jaguars last season, 0-3 (Oct. 4) and 1-3 on (Oct. 23). The Leathernecks have not beat IUPUI since Oct. 20, 2007, when they took a 3-0 victory

North Dakota State leads the all-time series 15-4. Western dropped both meetings last year in straight sets. The Leathernecks are looking for their first win over the Bison since Oct. 13, 2013 where they won 3-0.
 
DIGGIN' IT: As a team, the Leathernecks rank 23rd nationally (as of Sept. 26) with 1,073 digs on the year. Kaili Simmons has accounted for 323 of them, which ranks first in The Summit League. Her 4.82 digs/set ranks second. At Omaha on Sept. 27, Simmons compiled 37 digs to tie for the fourth-most digs in program history over a single match. Nationally, the senior ranks 27th in total digs and 75th in digs per set, as of Sept. 26.
 
LEATHERNECK LEADERS: Shalyn Greenhaw paces the Leathernecks' offensive attack 208 kills (3.10/set) to rank second in the league. She also ranks second on the team with 173 digs. Abby Skryd leads the team in both assists (471) and service aces (17). Lexi Kolschefski has 53 total blocks, followed by Riley Schumahcer with 31.
 
LAST TIME OUT: The Leathernecks (4-14, 1-2) are fresh off a big road win over Omaha on Sept. 27 by a score of 3-1. The victory over the Mavericks was their first over Omaha since the 2013 season. As a team, Western recorded a season-high 94 digs, led by Simmons who accounted for 37. Grove led the team with a new career-high of 12 kills, followed by Kolschefski with 11 (season-high). Hickey contributed with a season-best four service aces while Skryd dished out 38 assists. Defensively, Dechant led the team with four blocks followed by Greenhaw, who had three (all solo). Greenhaw had 19 digs and Hickey had a new season-high of 13.
 
UP AHEAD: After Sunday's match against NDSU, the Leathernecks host Valparaiso for a midweek, non-league matchup on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 6 p.m. in Brophy Hall.
