2016 'Day in the Life'
MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois volleyball team hits the road for the first time in seven matches Tuesday (Sept. 27), traveling to Omaha for a Summit League matchup. The Leathernecks face the Mavericks at 6 p.m. inside Baxter Arena. Both teams are 0-2 in Summit League play and have almost identical regular season records; Omaha is 3-13 while Western Illinois has a 3-14 overall mark.
 
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS: The Mavericks have wins over Ball State, Abilene Christian and Murray State, all in five sets. UNO dropped its first two league matches of the season to Fort Wayne and Denver by scores of 3-2 and 3-1, respectively. Defensively, Ashley Smith leads the team with 261 digs (4.28 digs/set), which ranks fourth in The Summit League. Kayla Torson leads the team with 177 kills, while Sydney O'Shaughnessy has 517 assists and 14 service aces.
 
SERIES HISTORY: Tuesday marks the ninth meeting between the two programs, with Omaha holding a 5-3 advantage. Western dropped both matchups last year, 1-3 on Oct. 20 and 0-3 on Nov. 1. The Leathernecks are looking for their first win over the Mavericks since the 2013 season.
 
DIGGIN' IT: As a team, the Leathernecks rank 23rd nationally in total digs with 979. Kaili Simmons has accounted for 286 of them, which ranks second in The Summit League. The senior is averaging 4.54 digs per set, which also ranks second. Nationally, Simmons ranks 27th in total digs and 75th in digs per set.
 
LEATHERNECK LEADERS: Shalyn Greenhaw leads Western offensively with 199 kills and is averaging 3.16 kills per set. The junior ranks in the top 20 nationally with 669 attack attempts. Abby Skryd has dished out 433 assists and 17 service aces to lead the team. Lexi Kolschefski has 50 total blocks.
 
LAST TIME OUT: Western hosted South Dakota and Fort Wayne over the weekend to open Summit League play, falling to both in straight sets.
 
UP AHEAD: The Purple and Gold travel to IUPUI on Friday (Sept. 30) before playing host to North Dakota State on Sunday (Oct. 2) at 1 p.m.
