2016 'Day in the Life'
MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois volleyball team is preparing to open Summit League play with a pair of contests against South Dakota and Fort Wayne. On Friday evening (Sept. 23), the Leathernecks take on the Coyotes inside Western Hall with first serve slated for 7 p.m. Western plays Fort Wayne on Sunday (Sept. 25) at 1 p.m.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS: South Dakota has garnered an 11-2 record this season. After dropping their season opener to Arkansas, the Coyotes went on an 11-match winning streak that was snapped by Iowa on Sept. 17. Audrey Reeg leads the team with 161 kills and ranks second in the league 3.58 kills per set. Lauren Mattison leads the team with 195 digs.
 
The Mastodons are 4-9 overall and play at Omaha on Sept. 23 before heading to Macomb. Fort Wayne recently dropped three in a row at the Hoftstra/Stony Brook Invite in New York. Jaqua Madison has dished out 421 assists (8.59/set), while Nicole Rightnoward has compiled 149 kills.
 
SERIES HISTORIES: South Dakota leads the all-time series 8-3. Last season, Western picked up a 3-2 victory on the road on Sept. 25 before dropping the second meeting 3-0 on Nov. 6. Fort Wayne has a 15-5 advantage. Western dropped both meetings a season ago, 3-2 on Oct. 2 and 3-0 on Nov. 10.
 
LEATHERNECK LEADERS: Kaili Simmons leads The Summit League with 251 digs. Her 4.40 digs per set ranks second in the league. Shalyn Greenhaw ranks second with 176 kills (3.09/set). Abby Skryd has dished out a team-leading 397 assists. Lexi Kolschefski has compiled 48 total blocks.
 
LAST TIME OUT: Western hosted Saint Louis on Sept. 20 where they fell 3-1. After dropping the first two sets (25-19, 25-14) the Leathernecks stormed back to take set three 25-20. In set four, the score was tied 17 times in a close battle that went to extra points. Western was unable to push set five and fell 31-29.
 
UP AHEAD: The Leathernecks enter the second week of Summit League play on the road. Western takes on Omaha on Sept. 27 with first serve set for 6 p.m. On Sept. 30, the Leathernecks head to Indianapolis, Ind. for a match against IUPUI. Western returns home to host North Dakota State on Oct. 2 at 1 p.m. inside Western Hall.
