Volleyball Falls to Missouri State

Western returns home for seven straight matches beginning Tuesday

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Western Illinois volleyball team took on Missouri State on the final day of the Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 10) where they fell in straight sets. With the loss, the Leathernecks drop to 0-10 on the season while the Bears improve to 6-3.

Western could never find any momentum in the opening set and fell by a score of 25-9.

In the second set, Western was trailing 12-7 and began to find traction following two kills from Shalyn Greenhaw, one from Lexi Kolschefski and a service ace from Hannah Walker to pull within four. The Bears would slowly pull away though and took the set 25-15.

Western kept things close in the third set. The team took advantage of three Missouri State errors and a kill from Riley Schumacher to bring the score within one, 10-9. Missouri State then used a 6-1 run to pull ahead 16-10. Claire Grove and Emilee Dechant each had a kill apiece late in the match, but it wasn't enough as the Bears took set five 25-18 and the match 3-0.

Melanie Patenaude led the team with five kills and Kaili Simmons had seven digs. Abby Skryd dished out 17 assists and one service ace.
