Leathernecks Fall in Close Match to Northern Illinois

The women's soccer program fell 1-0 to the Huskies Sunday, Aug. 28 on the road.

MACOMB, Ill. - In their third straight road match, the Western Illinois Fighting Leatherneck women's soccer team fell to Northern Illinois in a hard fought 1-0 match on Sunday (Aug. 28).

"We were much improved, performance and overall, we're taking baby steps in this process," said Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson. "We had one mistake that cost us the goal, but I thought we were improved defensively and in communication, so there are definitely things we can take heading into our next match."

The lone goal in the match happened in the second minute when NIU's Taylor Sarver scored from a six-yard shot. Western had multiple close chances with Ashley Kuhlmann and Alexandra Siavelis both recording a shot on goal. In total, Western recorded three shots in the match from Kuhlmann, Siavelis and Stacie Wolfgram. Defensively, Lexi Harris stood in goal for the Leathernecks and totaled three saves.

Both teams recorded an equal number of saves (3), while the Huskies finished with an 8-2 advantage in total corner kicks, as well as a 6-3 advantage in shots.

Western now shifts its focus to the first home regular season match at John MacKenzie Alumni Field. The Leathernecks welcome the Milwaukee Panthers, with kickoff set for Friday, Sept. 2 at 3 p.m.
