Leathernecks Fall To UMKC In Road Exhibition

The women's soccer program dropped a 3-0 road exhibition match to Kansas City.

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois women's soccer team dropped a 3-0 exhibition match on the road to Kansas City Saturday (Aug. 13).

"We played a quality side tonight in UMKC. They had a lot of the ball and wore us down a bit," \said Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johhnson. "We are starting to learn our identity as a team and finding out more about the character of our players, so it was a good trip for us."

Both teams were scoreless until the 27th minute when Kansas City's Nikki Lynch received a through ball in the top of the box for the first goal. Just under 30 minutes later the Leathernecks found themselves in a 2-0 deficit after UMKC's Lexie Howard scored in the 56th minute. The third and final goal of the match came in the 84th minute when UMKC's Kelsey Mothershed had an unassisted score.

Alanna Lalich, Mary Anderson and Stacie Wolfgram all recorded a shot in the match. Jennifer Currie and Inas Palmiero both split time in goal, in which Currie recorded a save, while Palmiero added two.
Next up, Western travels to Oskaloosa, Iowa for its third and final exhibition match, which takes place Monday, Aug. 15 at 6 p.m. Four days later, the Leathernecks will officially begin the regular season at Indiana State (Aug. 19) at 7 p.m.

"We need to use this next week to get healthy and prepare for the away opener at Indiana State on Friday," said Johnson.
