Fighting Leatherneck Softball Picks up Doubleheader Sweep Over IUPUI

Western picked up 12-inning 3-2 victory and took game two 4-1

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Western Illinois softball team picked up two crucial league wins over IUPUI on Friday, April 29. The Leathernecks battled for 12 innings before topping the Jaguars 3-2 in game one before going on to take game two by a score of 4-1. With the victories, Western moves to 6-8 in Summit League play (13-31 overall).

"I am so proud for the fight and grit that our team showed tonight. These were two big wins over a good IUPUI team," said head coach Holly Van Vlymen. "I was very proud of our pitchers tonight, they did a great job of keeping the IUPUI hitters off balance and shut them down in some key situations. Our hitters came through when we needed them to and our defense was solid."

Game One: Western Illinois 3, IUPUI 2 (12 innings)

Aly Compton was the first Leatherneck on base in the top of the second inning after she hit a double to left center. She was then brought home when Rachel Beatty followed up with a double of her own as Western took an early 1-0 lead.

Beatty extended the lead to 2-0 with a home run in the top of the fourth. The solo shot was Beatty's fourth of the year and her second in as many games.

The next inning, Emily Ira struck out the side to keep Western's lead untouched. The Jaguars would be held scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning when Ashley Ousley hit an RBI single to bring the score to 2-1.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, IUPUI's Ali Mosier hit a solo home run to center field to tie the score at 2-2 and send the game into extras.

The two sides exchanged chances for the next five innings. In the bottom of the ninth, Beatty collected her third hit of the game and Nina Maggio doubled, but the two were left stranded. Beatty would garner her fourth hit in the top of the 11th, but she was left stranded.

In the top of the 12th inning, Taylor Messer hit a leadoff single and Amanda Manton was brought in to pinch run. Holly Hoelting then singled to put two runners on with no outs. Both runners advanced to scoring position after a sacrifice bunt from Karissa Kouchis. The next at bat, Tierney Bottino hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Manton and give the Leathernecks a 3-2 lead.

Megan Lotarski would come in for relief in the bottom of the 12th inning as she collected a key strikeout and Western went on to win by a final score of 3-2.

Ira got the nod in the circle and produced five and a half solid innings of work. The freshman struck out six batters and only gave up one earned run off of four hits. Payton Abbott pitched five and a third innings of relief, setting a career-high four strikeouts and surrendering one earned run off of two hits. Abbott's performance led to her third win of the season and she is now 3-0 on the year. Lotarski pitched one solid inning, striking out one and giving up no hits to earn the save.

Beatty had an impressive day at the plate as she went four-for-five with a home run, two singles and an RBI double.

GAME TWO: Western Illinois 4, IUPUI 1

Things picked up where they left off in game two when Kouchis and Bottino drew back-to-back walks to force an early IUPUI pitching change. One batter later, Compton lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score Kouchis as the Leathernecks took an early 1-0 lead.

IUPUI would answer back following a two-out RBI double from Maggie Good in the bottom of the third to tie the game up 1-1.

The game remained tied as the two teams exchanged chances up until the top of the sixth. Kelsey Marlow singled down the right field line and Compton followed up with a double down the left field line to advance Marlow to third. Maggio then reached on a fielder's choice that scored Marlow to give the Leathernecks their lead back, 2-1.  Hailey Duwa then smacked a two-RBI triple down the right field line to score Compton and Maggio as Western pulled ahead 4-1.

The Leathernecks tried to add some insurance runs when Kouchis, Bottino and Marlow hit three consecutive singles in the top of the seventh. IUPUI was then able to turn a double play to get out of the jam.

Kacyee Hart threw the final three outs of her complete game in the bottom of the seventh inning as Western went on to win 4-1.

The victory was Hart's fourth of the year and eighth complete game. The senior surrendered six hits and only allowed one earned run and two walks.

Kouchis, Marlow and Duwa each recorded two hits. Duwa led the team with two RBIs while Compton and Maggio each drove in one apiece.

The final game of the three-game series is slated for tomorrow at 10 a.m. CT.
