Softball Drops Series Opener to South Dakota

Emily Ira struck out a career-high nine batters in the loss

VERMILLION, S.D. – The Western Illinois softball team dropped the opening game of a three-game series against South Dakota Saturday morning (April 2). Emily Ira struck out a career-high nine batters and only gave up three hits, but errors and home runs proved to be costly for the Leathernecks as they fell by a score of 4-0. With the loss, Western falls to 9-23 (2-2 Summit) on the year while the Coyotes improve to 8-25 (3-1 Summit).

Ira was unhittable in the circle through the first 2 ½ innings as she struck out seven straight batters.

In the top of the third, Rachel Beatty and Karissa Kouchis hit back-to-back singles but were left stranded at the end of the inning.

The Coyotes scored first in the bottom of the third when Jamie Holscher doubled to left field and was brought home when Morgan Vasa reached on an error. USD would add two more runs in the bottom of the fourth following a two-run home run from Taylor Steinfeldt, and one run in the bottom of the fifth from a home run from Yvon Minogue to pull ahead 4-0.

Western worked to answer back in the top of the sixth when Kelsey Marlow singled up the middle to extend her career-high hitting streak to seven games. Aly Compton followed up with a single of her own, but the two were left aboard at the end of six innings. Nina Maggio then tried to get a rally going with a leadoff single in the top of the seventh, but the Leathernecks fell short and dropped the game by a final score of 4-0.

The Leathernecks out hit the Coyotes six-to-three, but committed four fielding errors in the loss while USD committed two. Compton led the team with two hits for her third career multi-hit game.

The final two games of the series take place tomorrow (April 3) with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
