Softball Falls in Midweek Action to SIU-Edwardsville

Leathernecks welcome Omaha to Macomb for league play this weekend

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The Western Illinois softball team played a doubleheader against SIU-Edwardsville on Tuesday (April 12). The Leathernecks dropped both games to the Cougars by scores of 3-0 and 4-1 to fall to 10-26 on the year.

Game One: SIU-Edwardsville 3, Western Illinois 0

The Cougars used two hits and a Leatherneck error to score the games' only three runs in the bottom of the second.

Western's best chance to even the score came in the top of the sixth. Tierney Bottino got the inning started with a leadoff walk and advanced to second when Kelsey Marlow singled up the middle. Aly Compton then reached on a fielder's choice that advanced Marlow to second and forced Bottino out at third. Compton and Marlow pulled off a double steal, but the duo was left stranded in scoring position at the end of the inning.

Rachel Beatty hit two of Western's three hits, a leadoff triple in the top of the third and a single in the fifth. Emily Ira got the nod in the circle and struck out five batters to bring her strikeout total to 105 on the year. The freshman gave up three hits and two earned runs in four innings of work. Payton Abbott came in and pitched two solid innings of relief, striking out two and allowing no hits.

Game Two: SIU-Edwardsville 4, Western Illinois 1

In the top of the second inning, Nina Maggio reached first base on a fielder's choice and advanced to second to put herself in scoring position for Kacyee Hart. In her first at bat of the season, Hart hit an RBI single to right field to score Maggio and give the Leathernecks a 1-0 lead.

The Leathernecks held onto the lead until the bottom of the third when the Cougars scored one run to knot things up at 1-1.

Western had chances to gain the lead back, but couldn't capitalize on any opportunities and left eight runners on base throughout the game. The score stayed even until the bottom of the sixth when SIU-E scored three runs off of three hits to pull ahead 4-1.

Hart pitched several solid innings, tying her career high eight strikeouts and limiting the Cougars to just one hit through the fifth inning.

Marlow led the team with two hits, a double and a single in the first and third innings to extend her career-high hitting streak to 11 games.

The Purple and Gold welcomes Omaha to Macomb this weekend (April 16-17) for Summit League play. A doubleheader Saturday is set to begin at noon while Sunday's finale is slated to start at 11 a.m.
